The tribes of the Omo Valley are big on scarification, stretching their lips/earlobes and their beaded necklaces. Different patterns/colors mean different things, as well as how many they have on.
So my independent is based off African tribes, particularly Eastern African Tribes from the Omo Valley, near Ethiopia and the Kenya region. I've looked at everything from their faces, to their paint, scarification, jewelry. I want to work with soft, fleshy leathers, like deerskin and elk. They are extremely soft leathers that mould easily and just give nice shape. I also want to play around with volume and shape. Different ways to weave the leather, trupunto, things of that nature.
